How To Keep Your CCTV System Clean And Running Well

Posted on: 24 March 2020

CCTV systems are popular across Australia because they are easy to set up, provide a comprehensive overview of your property and can be hooked up to security firms for monitoring. The one problem that can come about when using CCTV systems is the natural aging and wear and tear a security camera will go through. There are ways that you can combat this, however, and all it takes are a few pieces of equipment and a bit of time for cleaning.

Microfibre Cloths

Whenever you clean anything that is primarily made of glass or other materials sensitive to scratching, you should be using a microfibre cloth. These cloths are specially made to avoid any type of scratching or detrimental effect on glass. They are often made for everyday glasses that many millions of Australians use, and you can pick them up from most department stores or online. You should only use the microfibre cloth on the glass itself as the fabric can age quite quickly, and for the camera casing, you can use a regular shammy. Gently wipe the lens a few times and then check to see if the camera's focus has been thrown off. If not, you are good to go!

Air

That's right — an essential piece of equipment in cleaning your CCTV cameras is air. It is particularly important in clearing out dust, dirt, grime and whatever else might be on the surface of your camera lens and around it, in the small nooks and crannies. Some CCTV camera specialists will recommend cans of compressed air, but you can get the same effect by blowing hard a foot or so away. Don't get too close, however, as you will get a mouthful of dirt! Compressed air is available in cleaning sections of many stores as well as in hobby shops.

Insecticide

A common issue with CCTV cameras, especially ones placed high up on your building, is the interference of bugs and spiders. They can create hives, nests and whatever else around your high-tech security cameras, and this is a major pain to clear off every time it happens. That is why when you do your semi-annual clean, you should place some long-lasting insecticides along the camera to stop it from becoming a home for creepy crawlies. You can find these insecticides at camping stores, and you should ask an assistant there for the longest-lasting one they have in stock.
